Valentine Lingerie For The Both Of You!
The word “lingerie” stems from the French word “lin” which means “linen” and applies to both male and female undergarments. In English, however, “lingerie” refers only to women’s underwear and bedroom garments which are made of nothing even remotely resembling linen but rather of light weight and sheer fabrics such as Lycra, nylon, nylon tricot, polyester, satin, chiffon, fishnet, lace or silk and are intended to be visually alluring and exotic.
The modern day concept of lingerie being visually appealing and deliberately tempting is quite new. Women’s underwear through the middle of the twentieth century were chosen for three main reasons none of which was in itself to attract men’s attention. The first reason was to alter or improve the woman’s figure by wearing a corset which later evolved into the girdle and the bra. The second reason for choosing a specific undergarment was for hygienic purposes with the intent to protect women’s very elaborate outer garments of those days from becoming soiled. The third and final reason for selecting a particular undergarment was for modesty during the very puritan era and therefore they were very big and ungainly.
Women’s underwear or lingerie gradually became smaller and more fitting to their bodies during the final years of the twentieth century. And in the revolutionary 1960s a lingerie manufacturer, Frederick’s of Hollywood, started to glamorize their very controversial products and marketed them as sexually appealing. The twenty first century brought with it an expansion of the lingerie industry and took it a few steps beyond with the new fashion of innerwear being worn as outerwear. In addition, although men’s underwear continues to be called underwear, it has become every bit as enticing as the very revealing women’s lingerie.
More lingerie is sold and bought as gifts to bestow upon loved ones in celebration of Saint Valentine’s Day than any other day of the year and it is no wonder.
