Valentines Day Decorations
Every day of the year is a perfect season for loving but Saint Valentine’s Day is a day for celebrating and saluting this love in an extra special and memorably way. Just like lighted Christmas trees are used to decorate for Christmas; bunny rabbits and colorful eggs are used to decorate for Easter; turkeys and fall leaves are decorations for Thanksgiving; Jack O’ Lanterns, ghosts, witches and tombstones are used at Halloween time; Saint Valentine’s Day deserves its very own and uniquely different set of holiday decorations. And it also deserves a party.
In preparing for your Saint Valentine’s Day party and to capture the unmistakable love that abounds in the open air around you, hang a Saint Valentine’s Day flag that brandishes an obvious Saint Valentine’s Day theme outside your home. In addition, drape a curtain on the exterior of your front door that is decorated with flowers (red roses are most appropriate), hearts, cupids and lovebirds. Instead of the curtain you can line your front door with shiny Valentine’s Day wrapping paper. Tape a colorful little note next to your front doorbell that says “Welcome to my love nest”, set a basket filled with chocolate kisses and heart-shaped candy beside your front door and attach a sign that says, “Help yourself to a bit of my love.” If you have trees or bushes in your front and back yards, you can hang red, pink and white hearts from them as well. All these will broadcast your sentiments for the day and for what it stands—romantic love.
Now you will also want to decorate your home from within. Hanging streamers in doorways that say “Happy Valentine’s,” “I love you,” “Be my Valentine,” and so on? Cover your tabletops with tablecloths that display the various Saint Valentine’s Day symbols such as hearts, cupids and lovebirds; arrange bouquets of red roses; bowls of heart- shaped chocolates; and scented candles on as many horizontal surfaces as you can. Your dining room table should be loaded with red and pink trays full of small heart shaped sandwiches that you formed with the help of a cookie cutter; heart shaped red and pink serving dishes filled with salads, casseroles and dips and chips; champagne and wine bottles decorated with hearts and plenty of wine glasses. Hang red and pink towels in your bathroom; fill your soap dish with little red, pink and white heart and rose shaped scented soaps, light sweet smelling candles and hang pink toilet tissue. Additionally, set a heart shaped dish filled with mints and hang a few signs that deliver Saint Valentine’s cheers.
You need to give your bedroom some extra special attention as well. This room will be out of limits to all your other guests but one—your beloved Valentine. Line the exterior of its door with a lacy red or white curtain and pin to it red roses and heart shapes as well as a sign that reads, “Entry for lovers only!”
Scatter red rose petals throughout the freshly dressed bed and place the special Saint Valentine’s Day card that you have made yourself under your beloved Valentine’s pillow. If you purchased a gift, place that under the pillow as well. Cover the bedside lamps with a thin red fabric, light scented candles and the fireplace (if available), have champagne chilling in an ice bucket at your bedside with two awaiting champagne glasses and romantic music playing in the background.
It is always wonderful to have someone special at your side on such occasions but if that is not an option, there is no law that I am aware of that prevents you from getting into the spirit of love and celebrating Saint Valentine’s Day even if you have no one to share it with. After all, you could be celebrating your love for life, for the arts, for mankind, for the entire creation.
