  • Twisting the stem of an apple on Saint Valentine’s Day and chanting a rapid succession of names of the opposite sex will predict who one will marry. The name which is verbalized at the precise moment when the stem breaks will be the future spouse.
  • Slicing an apple in half on Valentine’s Day and counting the seeds is a predictor of how many children one will have.
  • Wooden spoons were given as Valentine’s Day gifts in Wales. Hearts and keys were carved into these spoons to communicate, “You unlock my heart!”

  • Originally, love seats were simply wide chairs to accommodate one woman and her very wide skirts. Love seats later became S-shaped courting seats with two sections. The courting couple could sit together yet not very close.
